Racing back on track at WPMS

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

After a week's hiatus, racing returned to West Plains Motor Speedway Aug. 25, and there was even a bit of a break from the hot, hot temperatures of late.

As the drivers began hotlaps and kicked off the Stuff 4 Trucks' sponsored event, partly cloudy skies, a breeze and mid 80-degree weather graced the evening. Stacy and Chris Johnson were on hand with a display of their customized vehicles, along with door prizes.

When 28 IMCA Modifieds ran in four heats, it was no problem for the scorers.

Then when two were sidelined with mechanical problems, it left a field of 26 ready for the feature event, and that was a scorers challenge.

But they were up to the challenge, and with several cautions, along with a number of restarts and lead changes, Brandon Ball of West Plains emerged as the winner of the Stuff 4 Trucks IMCA Modified feature this week.

Balance of the modified top 10 included Kevin Salter of Batesville, who finished second, followed by Carmon Vincent of Moody, Chris Piper and Calvin Tribble, both of West Plains, Jason Snodgrass of Mountain Home, Jason Brigman of West Plains, Rustin Miller of Houston, Ben Ledgerwood of Birch Tree, and Billy Romans of West Plains.

Stan Ellison of West Plains won the Stuff 4 Trucks sponsored Super Stock feature event. Bobby Bryant of West Plains, who started 12th, finished second in the event, followed by Dee Kelly and Derald Kelly, both of Birch Tree, Andy Collins of West Plains, Jeff North of Rogersville, Kevin Collins of West Plains, Steve Sanders of Mountain Grove, Bruce Sutterfield of Jonesboro, and Bill Dixon of Thayer.

Balance of the Super Stock field included Clint Seamans of Imboden, Brandon Holder of Mammoth Spring, Richard Smith of Williford, and Kyle Jeffries of Versailles, Mo.

The Stuff 4 Trucks Hobby Stock feature win went to Dexter Frost of West Plains, followed by Shane Hitt of Birch Tree, Chuck Russell of West Plains, Marty Toten of Pomona, Jessie Shearin of Blue Springs, Doyle Frost of Alton, Don Wilson of Willow Springs, Scott Todd of Hardy, Travis Burnett of Ava, Tony Krusen of Thayer, Jamie Willis of Ava, Korey Whitelock of Alton, Brock Frost of Birch Tree, and Dean Smith of Mammoth Spring.

John Stiner of West Plains won the Stuff 4 Trucks Cruiser feature, with Tyler Newcom of Hardy taking second. Coming in third was Clifford Collins II, followed by Mark Doiron, both of West Plains, Murrill Pace of Gainesville, Rhonda Gunter of West Plains, Sissy Ratliff Seamans of Imboden, and Bill Harden of West Plains.

Winner of the Stuff 4 Trucks sponsored Youth Hobby Stock feature was Austin White of Willow Springs, followed by Ben Piper of West Plains, Cody Toten of Pomona, William Piper of Birch Tree, Kevin May of Pomona, and Kyle Duke of West Plains.

Next weekend will be the 17th Annual Coca-Cola sponsored Fall Nationals with the Show-Me Late Models and a full weekly racing program. Gates will open at 5 p.m., hotlaps at 6:30 p.m., with racing at 7 p.m. Adult admission will be $15, children 7-11 $5, and those 6-and-under are always free.
