Read Across America comes to Mammoth Spring School

Friday, March 28, 2003

MAMMOTH SPRING -- Mammoth Spring Elementary School students celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday during Read Across America week March 3-7. Many special activities were held throughout the week. On Monday, a special breakfast of green eggs and ham was served. The Cat in the Hat greeted students at the door and books were given away to every 25th student in the breakfast line. On Tuesday, students participated in Drop Everything and Read. The first 30 minutes of the school day were spent reading silently in their classrooms and several parents joined in the fun.

On Wednesday community members came and shared stories with each of the classes. On Thursday several high school students came to read or give book stalks to each of the classrooms. On Friday each class had a book swap. During the week a contest was held to determine the favorite book of the students at the school. The top 10 favorite books are: The Boxcar Children, Clifford the big Red Dog, Harry Potter and the Sorcer's Stone, Holes, Charlotte's Web, Where the Red Fern Grows, Green Eggs and Ham, Summer of the Monkeys. Old Yeller (voted overall favorite) and Little House on the Prairie.
