ALTON -- The Oregon County Sheriff's Department transported a Thayer man back to Oregon County from Jefferson City last week on a failure to appear charge.

Troy E. O'Banion, 31, of Thayer is being held in Thayer city jail because he failed to appear on a charge of damaging the Oregon County jail and jail property on Aug. 16, 2003.

A report from the sheriff's office said that in August 2003 O'Banion caused the sink at the jail to fall off the wall and flood the jail.

In other Oregon County Sheriff's Department action, officers transported Joseph Mayfield, 27, of Alton to the Missouri Department of Corrections last week on a probation violation charge.

Mayfield was sentenced to five years in state prison by Associate Circuit Judge Jo Beth Prewitt June 16 on an original forgery charge. A report from the Oregon County prosecuting attorney's office said that Mayfield is charged with stealing a purse from the vehicle of Elizabeth Shields that was parked at the Riverton Access. Taken from the purse was a check. Mayfield admitted taking the check to Wallace and Owens and Quick Connection at Alton trying to cash the check at both businesses.

Neither business would cash the check and it was at the Quick Connection he threw down the check and ran out the door.

Mayfield was apprehended by law enforcemnet officers a short time later.
