MAMMOTH SPRING -- A Mammoth Spring Man died as the result of a one-vehicle accident May 25. He was air lifted to Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains where he was pronounced dead.
Officer Michael Bunting with the Thayer Police Department said he observed Michael Corbin driving erratically in the Thayer city limits just after 9 p.m. Bunting turned on his lights and stopped Corbin just south of the Highways 63 and 142 East intersection.
Bunting said as he walked to the vehicle, a 1993 Jeep Cherokee, Corbin drove off down Highway 63 south at a high rate of speed. Bunting said he persued Corbin to the Missouri-Arkansas state line.
He said he notified the Fulton County Sheriff's Office and Mammoth Spring Police Department.
Officer Jamie Turnbough said just after entering Arkansas, Corbin, traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed over the Spring River bridge and failed to negotiate the gooseneck curve.
Turnbough said the Jeep left the roadway, traveled through the old Gooseneck Restaurant parking lot, hit a power pole, went off the bluff and hit a tree.
