Seniors can get help with tax preparation

Thursday, February 10, 2005

The Alton Senior Center and Thayer Senior Center will offer free assistance with completing the state of Missouri property tax credit application. This credit is based on real estate tax, rent paid, mobile home lot rental, personal property tax on mobile homes or nursing home costs paid. Applicants must have been 65 or older by Dec. 31, 2004, age 60 or older if receiving surviving spouse benefits or 100 percent disabled, and they must have been a Missouri resident for the entire year of 2004.

The IRS-certified volunteers are available to provide confidential assistance with completing this rebate claim under the MO-PTC program. Hours for this service are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday through April 13.

To request assistance with tax form completion, one will need to bring the following paperwork to the Alton Senior Center, located at 204 S. Main Street, or the Thayer Senior Center, located at 100 Chestnut Street:

* All income statements (1099, Social Security statements, pension/retirement fund statements, interest dividends, W-2s).

* Paid real estate property tax receipt, or a statement of your entire rent for 2004 (with your landlord's signature and Social Security number).

* If one's home is on more than five acres, one should bring a statement from the county assessor showing the homestead portion.

* If one is a 100-percent disabled veteran (or otherwise disabled), one needs to bring documents of proof.

The free assistance is coordinated by Southwest Missouri Office on Aging. For additional sites call 800-497-0822.
