Preparations are under way for Eaglefest 2003.
Eaglefest will be held in the Ash Flat City Park Oct. 4. This year there'll be more fun, food and entertainment. Vendors will serve funnel cakes, grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, cold drinks and fresh squeezed lemonade.
There will be free musical entertainment all day.
The Prison Band will entertain with their style of country, gospel and rock-n-roll music. Gospel groups, including the Mercy River Boys and Soul Searchers, will perform. Blue Horizon, a local band playing country and gospel, will also perform. Billy Joe French and his band will perform from 7 until 11 p.m. and will culminate the day's events with a street dance. "There'll be plenty of good toe tappin' so be sure to bring your lawn chair and plan to spend the day," said Charlotte Goodwin, an Eaglefest organizer.
Modern Image Photography will set up in the Community Center from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. A $10 fee will buy an 8-inch by 10-inch picture. Special orders will be available. Photographers Jerry Collins and Jack Fletcher have over 50 years experience in the photography field.
The Happy Stitchers Club of Ash Flat will present a mini quilt display. The display will be set up in the quilting room adjacent to the Community Center.
The Homewood Village seniors will hold bingo games in the Community Center from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30. Seats are limited and are on a first-come, first served basis. A schedule of games will be posted.
Show and Shine car exhibit will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Vehicles of various makes and models will be on display.
The annual chili cook-off, sponsored by First National Banking Company, will be held and an entry fee of $25 is required. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners for the best tasting chili. Also, cash prizes will be awarded for the best decorated first, second and third place booths. Rules can be picked up at Ash Flat City Hall Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., or send a self addressed stamped envelope to Eaglefest Chili Contest, P.O. Box 280, Ash Flat, AR 72513.
The free throw contest begins at 1 p.m. There are three divisions -- girls grades five, six and seven; boys grades five, six and seven; girls grades eight and nine; boys grades eight and nine; girls grades 10, 11 and 12; and boys grades 10, 11 and 12. The football throw contest will be held in the park. Prizes will be awarded for first and second place.
Other activities include the climbing rock wall. Starting at 10 a.m. and continuing throughout the day there'll be kids' games with prizes for the youngsters. Games include fish bowl game, ring toss, sponge toss, pencil pull and sucker pull.
Crafters are welcome to set up and a $10 booth space fee is required.
The Ash Flat Fire Department will hold an open house to educate the public about National Fire Prevention Week. Child activity books, coloring books and other goodies will be given away at the fire station. Air Evac is scheduled at approximately 1 p.m. in conjunction with the Spring River Paramedic Ambulance. Ash Flat Fire Department will conduct an auto extrication demonstration at approximately 1:30 p.m.
