Byron church celebrates 110 years

Thursday, October 2, 2003

The Byron Cumberland Presbyterian Church was founded in 1893. This year the church is celebrating its 110th birthday. The founding pastor was E.E. Morrow. Past pastors of the church have included Rev. Young Whitfield, Rev. Remmel Rowden, Rev. Bobby Coleman, Rev. Charles Faith, and current pastor Rev. Eric Wildhagen.

The quaint cobblestone church is located next to the Byron Cemetery in the Byron community. In an effort to preserve this historical building, the church has recently added a restroom and is also in the process of painting, updating and making various structural improvements to the building.

The church historian, Rena Neal, is currently compiling a church history book which includes pictures, historical information and other important facts pertaining to the church. Any person who has pictures or any information from the past may mail them to Rena Neal, 9872 Byron Rd., Salem, AR 72576 or call her in the evenings at 458-2973. Also, any donations to help in the renovation of the church can be sent to this address.

The church has Sunday School at 10 a.m. each Sunday and worship begins at 11 a.m. The church also has an active CPW which meets the second Tuesday of each month. Everyone is welcome to attend these services.
