Thayer Garden Club learns about state's birds

Thursday, February 3, 2005

Nine members and one guest, Barbara Webb, met in the new annex at Bank of Thayer for the January meeting of the Thayer Garden Club.

Paul Beck of the Missouri Department of Conservation gave a presentation on the birds of Missouri. He said there are 400 species, and he showed beautiful examples on a huge screen. Some of those mentioned were the house finch, red winged blackbird, oriole, red bellied woodpecker, house wren, cedar waxwing, white breasted nuthatch, field sparrow and magnolia warbler. Thayer is fortunate to have Beck as a resident.

President Betty Sorenson conducted a brief business meeting. Kate Ackersley, Sorenson's daughter, has made pages for the 2005 yearbook. She is artistic and the pages are beautiful.

In addition to Sorenson, the new officers are: Lorene Phonert, vice president; Viola Scallions, secretary-treasurer; Dorys Ward, news reporter. Committees include: Birds, Goldie Norton; Civic, all members; Conservation, Emma Wrenfrow (she will also serve on the Scrapbook Committee, with assistance from Evelyn Ramsey); Membership, all members; Ways and Means, Dorys Ward; Telephone, Dorothy Manker. Sunshine and Yard of the Month Sign chairmen have not been named yet.

The February meeting will be at the Bank Annex.
