Matthew Scott Rhoads, 21, of Russellville, Ark., died Jan. 4, 2004, at Opelika, Ala., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident while returning to active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. Born Sept. 2, 1982, at Calico Rock, Ark., he was the son of Phillip Dave Daniel and Loretta Lee Calmes Rhoads. He was a 2001 graduate of Dardanelle High School, where he was a member of the VICA and the ROTC. After graduation from high school he entered the U.S. Army in January of 2002. He enjoyed automobiles and restoration of automobiles.
Survivors include his fiancee, Mandy Staggs of Jacksonville; his father, Phillip D. Daniel of Shelbyville, Tenn.; his mother, Loretta Rhoads of Russellville; a brother and sister-in-law -- Roby and Stacie Rhoads of Pottsville; three sisters and a brother-in-law -- Diane Rhoads of Russellville, Shirley and Richard Casey of Russellville and Dawn Daniel of Wisconsin; four nieces; and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents -- Robert and Mabel Calmes and Art and Kate Daniel.
The funeral was Jan. 8 at the Shinn Chapel officiated by the Rev. Mike Galoway and the Rev. David Downum. Burial, with full military honors, was at the Arkansas State Veterans' Cemetery in North Little Rock, Ark., with arrangements under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.
Pallbearers were members of the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
Honorary pallbearers were Bob Holand, Thelbert Hamilton, Doyle Claypoole, Don Turney and Robert Holand, Sr.
