Jewell Marie Cruse Bettis, who lives at Ash Flat Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, turned 100 years old Jan. 25.
Born in Williford, she is the daughter of Josephine Campbell Cruse and Robert "Curly" Cruse. She married Dan Webster Bettis and spent many years living in the Williford area.
Bettis is the mother of two children -- Dan W. Bettis of Bono, and Mary Jo Kester of Highland. She has five living grandchildren, two deceased grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Bettis's husband died in October of 1978 and she continued to live by herself until she had a stroke approximately six years ago. Today, she is able to walk with a little help, and her mind is quite sharp although she has some speech difficulties as a result of her stroke.
She looks forward to getting her hair done every week and still puts on her makeup, especially if she knows she is having company.
Her children and grandchildren planned a special day for her Jan. 25 to celebrate her 100 years.
