Izard County High School's chess team won the Class A-AA State High School Team Chess Tournament at Searcy Feb. 21.
Michael Martin, a ninth grader, was named the most valuable player.
Izard County won the team competition with 10.5 points. Episcopal Collegiate was second with six points and Kirby finished third.
In addition to Martin finishing first, John Davis, Aragon Wyatt and Steven Haney placed third, sixth and seventh, respectively, for Izard County in the A-AA division.
Other members of the team include Randy Sutton and Tyler Wallis.
Steve Manes is the coach and this is the third consecutive year that ICC has won the state high school chess championship.
The tournament was administered by officials from the Chess Association for Arkansas Schools. This is the third year of senior high chess competition sanctioned by the Arkansas Activities Association.
