Gregory A. Hartness, 59, of DeKalb, Ill., died Nov. 9, 2007, at his residence in DeKalb. He was born March 24, 1948, in Pocahontas, Ark. He was the son of John S. and Donna L. (Hattersly) Hartness.
Greg was married to the former Kathy Adkinson on June 25, 1970, in Plano, Ill. Greg retired from the United States Army after 23 years, earning the rank of Master Sergeant, he then went to work for the DeKalb School District for 12 years and was the head custodian at Jefferson Elementary School. Greg and Kathy have lived in DeKalb since 1990, moving there from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Greg served his country during the Vietnam War and received the Purple Heart during his tour. He was a member of the American Legion Post 66 in DeKalb and the VFW of DeKalb. Greg graduated from Williford High School class of 1967. He then attended college for 2 years earning his business associates degree.
Survivors include: his wife, Kathy of DeKalb; son, Mikel (Dana) Hartness of Waynesville, Mo.; daughters, Rachael (Kurtis) Miller of Kyle, Texas, Angela (Jerry) George of Oregon; his mother, Donna L. Hartness-Hutsell of Poughkeepsie; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Rometh (Dan) Michael of Aurora, Ill.; a brother, Scott Hartness of Williford; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his father, John; step-father, Gene Hutsell; brother, Guy A. Hartness; sister, Victoria Claude; and nephew, Levi Foster.
Funeral services with Military Honors were held on Nov. 13 in the Ronan-Moore-Finch Funeral Home. Cremation followed services in the Finch Crematory.
