Born 12-8-1915 -- Died 6-12-2005
Maryann Wolfram Smith, formerly of Cherokee Village, died June 12, 2005, at her home at Luther Manor in Milwaukee, Wisc.
She was born Dec. 8, 1915, in Sheboygan, Wisc., the youngest daughter of Oswald and Ida Wolfram. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School and Sheboygan Vocational Tech College before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, as the first woman to enlist from Sheboygan County.
On July 5, 1944, she married Ellis "Gene" Smith of New Burn, N.C., who preceded her in death after 54 years of marriage. For many years, her favorite job was as a stay-at-home mom to her three children, but she later worked as an executive secretary for several major firms in Detroit, Mich., and Sheboygan. She and her husband volunteered in a prison ministry, as house-parents for many foreign students and teaching English to Hmong immigrants. She was a member of the American Legion and Peace Lutheran Church of Cherokee Village, although she had attended Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church of Milwaukee in recent years.
Her surviving family includes: two sons, Michael Forrest (Joan) of Shorewood, Wisc., and Steven John (Candee) of Madison, Wisc.; one daughter, Marygene Ethel of Milwaukee; three grandchildren, Jeremy, Jennifer and Michelle; and one nephew, Daniel Wendland (Kathy) of Ft. Collins, Co.
Memorial services will be held June 26 at 2 p.m. at her daughter's home in Milwaukee, with Rev. Thomas Eggebrecht officiating.
Memorials are requested to go to three Christian day schools: St. John's Lutheran School, NY; Peace Lutheran Preschool, Cherokee Village; and Mt. Calvary Lutheran School, Milwaukee. Memorials may be sent in care of her daughter to 2534A N. 63rd St. Milwaukee, WI., 53213
