Roscoe Lawrence Simmons was born the son of Ocea Simmons and Almeda Johnson Simmons on July 6, 1934, in Alton, Mo., and died Sept. 28, 2007, in West Plains, Mo., at the age of 73.
He was united in marriage Sept. 15, 1962, at Alton to Joan ?Howell.
He was a graduate of Alton High School with the class of 1952 and remained in close contact with his classmates throughout the years.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Alaska Territory. After returning from serving in the service, he worked with his family in the Alton Ice and Locker Plant.
Simmons was a dedicated employee, serving as Postal Clerk in the Alton Post office for 38 years.
He was an avid gardener, always sharing his beautiful flowers with others in his community and providing floral arrangements for the church sanctuary each week.
He enjoyed deer and quail hunting and especially when he shared this time with his son, Randy.
He was a member of the Alton United Methodist Church for 61 years.
Survivors include: his wife, Joan of the family home in Alton; one son, Randy Simmons and wife, Bobbi of Alton; two brothers, Larry Simmons of Alton and Gilbert Simmons of Pomona, Mo.; several nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Ocea and Almeda Simmons; one brother, Robert Simmons; two sisters, Mary Ellen Wainscott and Rita Simmons; one infant brother, Danny Simmons and one infant sister, Glenda Simmons.
Funeral services were held Oct. 1 at the Alton United Methodist Church in Alton with David Scott officiating. Burial followed in the Shiloh Cemetery west of Alton with arrangements under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
