THAYER - The Thayer City Council opened several sealed bids and accepted them for surplus city merchandise at the Feb. 8 council meeting. Some of the items sold include: a Ford truck, two Heckingdorn riding lawnmowers, a White riding lawn mower, an Ariens 16-horse V twin riding lawnmower, one generator, a jungle gym and a large slide.
The council turned its attention to the city cemetery, discussing the possibility of an ordinance that would increase the cost of burial plots at the cemetery. The plots are currently $75 for city residents and $150 for those living outside the Thayer city limits. The council discussed raising the cost of the plots to $200 for city residents and $250 for those living outside the city limits. No action was taken on the issue.
The council directed Thayer City Tax Collector Janice Tolar to write off some uncollected city taxes.
Council members voted to buy a large generator. They said the generator now used by the city will operate only one well if the electricity goes out. The city operates three wells and the council said it needs a generator large enough to operate all three wells.
