Eugene B. Askren, 77, of Mountain Home. formerly of Ash Flat, died Feb. 5, 2005, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home.
Born April 21, 1927, in Croydon, Ind., he was the son of Smith K. Askren and L. Ethel Randall Askren. He moved to the Sharp County area from Anderson, Ind. Mr. Akren got the newspaper bug in 1943 when he started working for the Croydon Democratic in Croydon. From there he went to the Richmond Palladium in Richmond, Ind., from 1951 until 1956 where he worked in the composing room. In 1956 he started at the Hamilton Journal News in Hamilton, Ohio. In 1963 Gene moved to Elkhart, Ind.' and started at the Elkhart Truth where he stayed for 23 years, retiring as the production manager in 1989. Gene also loved golf and played wherever and whenever he could, hot, cold, rain or shine.
Survivors include three sons -- Gary Askren of Bristol, Ind., Michael Askren of El Dorado, Ark. and James Askren of Elkhart; two daughters -- Diana Askren of Elkhart and Barbara St. Amant of Wayne, Mich.; a brother, Rev. Charles Askren of Croydon; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and a sister.
