Man killed by car near Alton
A Cherokee Village, Ark., man was killed when he was run over by a vehicle April 22 south of Alton.
Dead is Nathan Rhoads, 28.
According to Sgt. D.D. Finley with Troop G of the Missouri Highway Patrol, Rhoads was seated in the middle of Route E, six miles east of Alton, at 8:35 p.m. when he was struck by a 1993 Mercury Cougar driven by Sabrina Lopez, 18, of Hardy.
Rhoads was transported to Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains where he was pronounced dead.
Finley said no citations had been issued as of press time and the investigation into the accident continues.
This is the second pedestrian fatality in Oregon County in recent months.
On Feb. 26 Thomas R. Corp, 30, of Mammoth Spring was found lying in the road between the Myrtle Package Store and the Myrtle Convenience Stores. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Oregon County Coroner Tom Clary.
Oregon County Sheriff Tim Ward went to the home of Robert Yell near Myrtle the next morning believing the truck that struck Corp was at his residence. While the sheriff was talking to Yell, Justin Barton, 31, of Alton, the owner of the truck, used a .22 magnum to shoot himself in the head behind the house, according to authorities. He has been in a Springfield hospital since the incident.
No one has been charged in Corp's death.
