Horses die in barn fire

Thursday, April 27, 2006

Four horses perished in a fire that destroyed a barn near a home on Highway 354 near Ash Flat April 22, said Center Fire Chief Brad Davis.

Firefighters were dispatched to the fire at Robin Brewer's home at 797 Highway 354 around 3 p.m.

Five volunteer firemen from Center and six firemen from Ash Flat responded.

"We had a pretty fast response time, but it was fully engulfed when we got there," Davis said.

Davis said he thinks hay in the barn caused the fire to spread rapidly.

"I really don't know a cause right now," Davis said.

A family had been living in the barn's living quarters. No person was injured.

Glenn Allen, who was at the ranch, was able to get a stud horse out of the barn but was unable to reach the other horses, Davis said.
