Chance Roper, a recent graduate of Viola High School, took top honors in the calf roping division of the Wrangler High School Rodeo finals June 15-18 in Columbia, Mo.
With his win in Columbia, Roper earned a spot on the Missouri State Rodeo team that will be traveling to Springfield, Ill., to compete in the 58th annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR), scheduled for July 24-30.
The NHSFR is the world's largest rodeo and will feature over 1,500 contestants from 40 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia.
In addition to competing for over $175,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants will also be vying for more than $325,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National High School Rodeo National Champion. In order to earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 after two go-rounds of competition before advancing to the finals on the event's last day.
