An Oxford man is dead after an apparent murder/suicide in Independence County April 11.
Dewayne Vest, 48, of Ferro Road in Oxford was killed by Steven Pearson, 42, of Batesville in the home of a female acquaintance, according to authorities.
Independence County deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call from what authorities described as a frantic female on Sugar Street in the Southside area around Ramsey Mountain.
The officers arrived at a mobile home which belonged to Martha Faye Roberts, 48, of Southside who made the 9-1-1 call. She told officers a shooting had occurred in her home.
Officers found the bodies of Vest and Pearson lying on the floor of the residence.
Authorities said Vest had three gunshot wounds, two in his body and one in the back of his head. Pearson had one gunshot wound in the head. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by Independence County Coroner Hardy Willis.
The bodies were sent to the state crime lab soon after.
Captain Bill Lindsey of the Independence County Sheriff's Office said Pearson and Roberts were previously in a relationship and had lived together for 10 years but had split up recently. He said Vest was just an acquaintance of Roberts.
Lindsey said Vest worked in the area as a carpenter. He said the bodies have been returned from the state crime lab and investigators are waiting for a preliminary autopsy report. A full report won't be completed for approximately six months, he said.
