HOWELL COUNTY -- A Thayer man awaiting trial on sex charges appeared in Howell County Court June 20 for a hearing because he left the state, violating conditions of his bail.
Mikel R. Sand, 28, of Thayer has been awaiting trial in Howell County on a change of venue from Oregon County on sex charges involving two girls under the age of 12 between June 2001 and July 2003. He is now in the Howell County Jail with no bond.
Judge Don Henry set Nov. 2 as the date for a trial for Sand. His attorney, Howell County Public Defender Donna Anthony, told the judge Sand would like to have his case heard by a jury but the sentencing by the trial judge.
The move to keep Sand in jail comes from Oregon County Prosecuting Attorney Fred ONeill because it was in Oregon County where he was arrested on sex charges.
Sand was taken into custody four months ago in Texas on Texas charges of possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Oregon County Court records show he was trying to re-enter the U.S. from Mexico when he was caught.
Sand faces several charges from Oregon County including deviant sexual intercourse with a person less than 14 years old and child molestation.
His bail was originally set at $100,000 and he was not to travel beyond Oregon, Howell, Shannon and Carter counties.
