James W. Nichols

James W. Nichols, 83, died April 12, 2006, while vacationing in Cherokee Village.

He was born April 14, 1922 in LaGrange, Ky., the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs Kirby Nichols. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers L.B. Sam, Emil and Bruce; a half-sister, Mattie; and two sons, Philip in 1969 and Kirby in 1984.

He married Frances Virginia Martin Aug. 8, 1943, in Evening Star. They were blessed with six children, Carolyn (Bill) Kuchar, James Nichols, Philip Nichols, Noel (Vicky) Nichols, Rita (Bill) Decker, and Kirby Nichols.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army during World War II in Germany and France. Coming to Rockford in 1950, he worked at Atwood Vacuum Machine for 28 years. After retiring Jim and Frances operated the Best Flowers Florist in Corning, Ark. before retiring to Cherokee Village for 16-1/2 years. He returned to Rockford in 2001 to live in the Christian Life Retirement Center.

Active in his Christian life he served as board member for 12 years at the Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ in Rockford, and Sunday school superintendent at the United Pentecostal Church, Corning, Ill. He also attended at Faith Tabernacle in Hoxie and New Life Church in Harvard, Ill.

Survivors include his wife, children; grandchildren, Josh (fiance, Shannon), Kim, Melody (Andre), Johnathon, Gabriel Ambry and Jennifer; and stepgrandchildren, Nathan (Diane), Nicole (Chris), Greg (Jessica), and Mark; many nieces and nephews; and friends, brothers and sisters in Christ.

The funeral services were held in Rockford April 17 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, with Rev. Spurlock of New Life Church officiating.

Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrange-ments were under the direction of Tri-County Funeral Home of Hardy.
