Bobcats sweep season series with Salem Greyhounds

Thursday, April 20, 2006

The Thayer Bobcats completed a successful sweep of their home-and-home series with the Greyhounds of Salem, Ark., April 14.

After edging past the Greyhounds 12-10 the previous week at Salem, the Cats made it two in a row over their neighbors from the Natural State with an 11-3 victory at Thayer on Good Friday.

While outhitting the Hounds 12-5, Thayer also took advantage of four Salem errors in the win.

Justin Brown picked up the win on the hill, while John Tollenaar led the Bobcat hit parade with a double and round-tripper.

Extra-base hits were the order of the day for the Cats, as Dustin Gaines logged a double and triple, while Scott Hargus and Garrett Smith also notched a three-bagger each. Jacob Eckman, Anthony Brown and Eric Williams also hit safely for Thayer.

The Cats (11-3, 2-1) picked up a big South Central Association victory April 13 with a late-inning explosion against the Mountain View/Birch Tree Liberty Eagles.

Thayer scored 13 runs over the course of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to blow past the Eagles for a 16-6 rout.

Tollenaar and Williams both knocked the ball out of the yard, while Justin Brown, Ben Martin and Smith all doubled. Hargus and Eckman posted a hit apiece in the Bobcats' 10-run win.

Rallying from a 4-0 hole after the third inning, the Bobcats pushed past the Ava Bears 9-7 in SCA play April 10.

Saddled with a four-run deficit, Thayer moved in front of the Bears with a six-run fourth inning, before topping things off with three more runs in the sixth.

Williams rapped three hits for the Cats, while Eckman hit a two-bagger.

Tollenaar, Anthony Brown and Luke Martin all hit safely in the Bobcats' two-run victory over their SCA rivals from Ava.
