By slowing things down late in the game and taking advantage of some big free throws from Kasey Humphries, the Viola Longhorns slipped past the Calico Rock Pirates 42-34 at the Longhorn Corral Oct. 22.
Earlier in the night, the visitors from Calico Rock overpowered its host 57-32.
In the boys' contest, Viola held a slim three-point lead, 31-28, after three periods of play.
With the ball in their possession to open the fourth, the Longhorns spread the floor and worked the ball around the perimeter, finally able to pull the Pirates out of the zone defense they preferred most of the evening.
This patience on Viola's part paid of, as Lucas Rains (11 points) and then Humphries (13 points) hit back-to-back jumpers to extend their team's lead to 36-30.
Then as time started winding down, Calico Rock was forced to foul in hopes of extending the game.
Humphries had no problems with this and went six-for-six from the charity stripe in the last 50 seconds of action to seal the deal on Viola's 42-34 victory.
Jake Pool (nine points) drained a trey at the buzzer for the Pirates, but it was a bit too late, with Calico Rock posting just six points in the last frame, thanks to Viola playing keep away with the basketball.
Viola held an 11-10 lead after the first period, but Calico Rock pulled ahead 15-13 early in the second on a stickback from Marshall Branscum (nine points) and 3-ball from Jacob Edwards.
With the game locked at 20-all just before the break, Marlin Coggins (10 points) shook free for a layup with 10 ticks on the clock that gave the Horns a 22-20 halftime lead.
Austin Springfield finished the night with eight points for Viola.
Heath Branscum tallied seven points for Calico Rock.
On the girls' side of things, Viola stayed close for most of the first period before turnovers caught up with the Lady Longhorns and Calico Rock found its stride.
With the Lady Pirates in front 15-11 after one, Calico Rock used an 11-2 run early in the second to open some breathing room.
Kim Sutterfield (13 points) chipped in with five points during this burst, while Hannah Wright (14 points) added a layup for Calico Rock.
Leslie Barker (12 points) stopped this run with a trey at the 3:24 mark of the second, but the Lady Pirates then ripped off a 7-2 burst to close the half with a 33-18 lead.
As Viola tried to find solid ground in the third, the Lady Pirates continued to extend their advantage.
Kori Lamb (11 points) tossed in seven points in the third for Calico Rock and a layup at the buzzer by Miranda Jones (nine points) pushed the Lady Pirates in front 45-24 after three.
Jessica Sanders and Emily Jenkins had four points each for Calico Rock, with Carlene Crumby adding two.
Chasidy Hutson tossed in seven points for Viola, while Elisabeth Collins logged six and Heather Simmons four. Taylor Griggs finished with two points, and Dedra Johnston one for the Lady Horns.
