Rubert J. Ray, 91, of South Bend, Ind., died in his daughter's residence at 2:30 a.m. July 3, 2006. He was born in Hardy on Dec. 4, 1914, the son of the late Lemuel "Jack" and Ruthie (Vaughn) Ray.
He was married to Dorothy P. Russell on June 28, 1941, in Hardy.
Survivors include four daughters, Carolyn (Donald) Simpson of South Bend, Ind., Sue (Jerry) Handley of South Bend, Dottie (Les) Prout of Mendon, Mich., and Lottie (David) Holt of South Bend; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Lilly Ray, Ova Burton, Ocea Burnside, Lizzie Phelps and Ruby Morgan; and three brothers, Lemuel, Ivan and Clarence and a granddaughter, Pamela Simpson in 1998.
He enjoyed farming in his early years and gardening. He loved playing the violin and collecting violins along with antiques.
He was a member of Willowdale Church of Christ in Elkhart, Ind.
He retired in 1979 from Uniroyal after nearly 25 years of service.
The funeral services were held in the Bubb Funeral Chapel July 7 with James Handley of Cherokee Village and William Myers of Elkhart officiating. Burial followed in the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Bubb Funeral Home.
Pallbearers included Gregory Simpson, Randy Simpson, Daniel Handley and Allen Holt.
Honorary pallbearers included Brandon Bruntz, Kristopher Handley and Nicholas Simpson.
