Alvin Joshua Murphy died Feb. 22, 2006, in West Plains, Mo., at the age of 87.

He was born May 18, 1918, in Fulton County, Ark., the son of the late Joseph Aaron and Bertha Mae Pendarvis Murphy. He was united in marriage May 3, 1938, in Oregon County, Mo. to Thelma Dickey.

He was a farmer and an avid outdoorsman, enjoying coon hunting and fishing. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, and was noted for his baseball playing talent. He coached a community baseball team for several years, and according to many, had he been willing to leave the farm and his family, he could have made baseball a career.

He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Murphy of the home in Mammoth Spring; nine children, Shirley Hunsperger and husband, Junior, of Koshkonong, Betty Baldridge and husband, Everett, of Hardy, Ruth Cornell and husband, Jim, of Mammoth Spring, Bertha Jean Huffmaster and husband, Danny, of Mammoth Spring, Louise Bishop of Mammoth Spring, Alvin D. Murphy and wife, Diane of Centerton, Ark., Neoma Todd and husband, Harold, of Mammoth Spring, Joey Murphy and wife, Linda, of Mammoth Spring, and Anna Bell Gengler and husband, Richard, of Le Mars, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Viola Robinson of Goobertown, Ark., and Pauline Hatfield of Ozark, Mo.; two stepsisters, Teresa Lester and Dorothy Davis, both of California; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Virgil Wayne Bishop; two great-grandchildren, Dillan Murphy and Callie Mae Hunsperger; one sister, Eva Hagg; one brother, James Wesley Murphy; one stepbrother, Jeff Lester and one son-in-law, Donald Bishop.

Funeral services were held Feb. 25 at Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer. Burial followed in the Flint Cemetery in Mammoth Spring, with Lee Moses officiating. Arrangements were by Carter Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Devin Murphy, Jeramy Murphy, Buckey Murphy, Danny Huffmaster, David Hunsperger and Dale Hunsperger.

Honorary pallbearers were Bill Hunsperger, Gary Baldridge, Jerry Baldridge, Donnie Bishop, Adam Stanley and Jamie Todd.
