John Quinn "J.Q." Clary, 83, of Alton, Mo., was born July 20, 1921, in Mountain Grove, Mo., and died May 2, 2005, at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains, Mo.
J.Q. and Nancy Clary founded the Clary Funeral Home of Mammoth Spring, Ark. He was Oregon County Coroner for 30 years, served both as mayor and councilman for the city of Alton, served on the Alton R-V School Board for several years and was involved in various civic organization, including chamber of commerce, American Legion, VFW and Rotary. He was a member of the Alton United Methodist as well as the Masonic Lodge. As a teen-ager growing up in Mountain Grove, he became the one of the area's first Eagle Scouts and was a gifted vocalist, earning a 1++ at the state level, advancing onto the national level.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Clary; two sons â€" John Q. Clary Jr. and wife, Nancy Clary; two sons John Q. Clary Jr. and wife, Cathy, of Atlanta, Ga., and Tom Clary and wife, Diana, of Alton; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Clary of Springfield, Mo.; a brother, Gene Clary and wife, Sharon, of Mountain Grove, Mo.; a sister, Margaret Ann Gregory; eight grandchildren â€" Rob Clary, Marisa Clary, Jason Clary, Chris Clary, Jamie Clary, Jonathan Clary, Matthew Clary and Brad Clay; and four great-grandchildren â€" Taylor, Devin Drew and Avery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Josephine Clary; and a son, James K. "Jim" Clary.
The funeral service was May 6 at Clary Chapel with David Scott officiating, and with interment following in the Hickory Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Alton.Memorial contributions may be made to the Alton United Methodist Church Community Center.
