News in Brief

Thursday, May 26, 2005

The Charles Burkett American Legion Post 344 of Thayer will hold a "Dedication to all Veterans" ceremony May 28 at 11 a.m. at the south gate to the Thayer Cemetery.

According to Post Commander Don Smith, several events are scheduled for the day, including a performance by bagpiper Dwayne Dunlap. Smith said a firing squad composed of the post honor guard and a bugler playing Taps will also be at the ceremony.

Smith said as post commander he will give the dedication and Thayer Mayor Allen Deckard will read a proclamation.

"The afternoon before our service, around 5 p.m., the veterans of our post will line the driveway of the cemetery with small flags. Anyone that has a service connected family member buried in the Thayer Cemetery may have one of the flags to decorate the grave site," Smith said.

"This is the second year the post has held a Memorial Day weekend service at the cemetery, but the American Legion Post has been placing flags at the cemetery driveway for a long time," Smith said.

Homecoming activities are scheduled for Memorial weekend at the Arytown Community Building.

A fish fry will begin at approximately 6 p.m. May 28. Those planning to attend are asked to bring a dish, and donations will be accepted for the meal.

Beginning at 7 p.m. the cemetery Committee will begin the annual business meeting.

"This is an annual get-together where former residents and people from the area meet to visit, renew old acquaintances and enjoy coming back to see where they grew up," organizers said.

All interested persons are invited to attend any or all of the evening's activities.

The Arytown Community Building is located about 11 miles east of Thayer; go to Highway 142 to EE, then north about 1 1/2 miles to County Road 246, then east 1 mile to the community building.
