Sanders sets Chamber course

Thursday, February 16, 2006

Salem Chamber of Commerce has appointed Mary Sanders of Salem to be the new president for 2006 after former president Mike Richardson resigned his position to take a job in Mountain Home.

"I just had a few members ask me and Mike asked me. They were just finding someone to fill the position," Sanders, 27, said.

Sanders said her duties as president will be delegating the responsibilities of chamber members, speaking with the media and keeping the community informed.

"One thing I want to do is raise awareness in the community of what the chamber does," Sanders said. She said there are a lot of people who don't understand what the chamber does.

Sanders said one of the major developments of the chamber this year is the Chamber Insurance Alliance Program.

"It's a health insurance program offered to our members," Sanders said. She said it is a discounted insurance for any business with one to 199 employees.

Sanders is the marketing director for the Bank of Salem where she has been employed for a year and a half.

Sanders was born and raised in Salem. She graduated from Salem High School in 1996. Her father, Jackie Sanders, owned Sanders' Garage in Salem, and her mother, Opal, worked in the cafeteria of Salem High School.

Sanders got a bachelor's degree in accounting from Arkansas State University in 2000.
