The Izard County High School Chess Team won the Class A and AA Regional Chess Tournament held at Pocahontas High School Jan. 21 for the fifth consecutive year.
Steven Walker, a sophomore, won all five of his matches and was named most valuable player.
Izard County High School had five players who placed in the top six individually. Walker, Randy Sutton, Michael Martin, Steven Haney and Tyler Wallis finished first, second, third, fourth and sixth, respectively, out of 35 participants. Sutton, Martin, Haney and Wallis are all juniors.
The team coaches are Kendall Wallis and Derrick McCandlis. In the team competition, Izard County was first, Piggott placed second and Rector was third. Other teams participating in the tournament were Maynard, Hillcrest, Black Rock, Calico Rock and Williford. ICC will now compete in the state tournament April 1 at a site to be determined.
The tournament was administered by officials from the Chess Association for Arkansas Schools and was sanctioned by the Arkansas Activities Association.
