Mammoth Spring saw its basketball season come to an end Feb. 22 in the first round of the 1A Region 2 Tournament at the Cougars' Den in Brockwell.
The Lady Bears fell to Calico Rock 73-50, while the Bears were done in at the hands of the Melbourne Bearkatz, 56-49.
The Lady Bears started off their contest against Calico Rock with purpose, as Mammoth Spring enjoyed a six-point lead in the first half.
The Lady Pirates regrouped a bit right before intermission and narrowed the gap to two, 28-26, at intermission.
Then the Lady Pirates really regrouped in the third period.
Calico Rock blasted Mammoth Spring with a 28-4 run right after the half to end any hopes the Lady Bears had of pulling off an upset.
Kayly Vest led Mammoth Spring with a game-high 24 points, while Jessy Jo Vest chipped in with 10, Amy Young nine and Stevi Smith three. Sierra Smoot and Shelby Frey ended the game with two points each.
Brittany Fountain paced Calico Rock with 15, while Hannah Wright finished with 13 and Kim Sutterfield 12. Jessica Sanders had eight, with Courtney Lester and Taylor Cox posting seven points each. Kori Lamb hit for four, while Emily Jenkins, Miranda Jones and Annie Blankenship posted two points each. Carlene Crumby added one point for the Lady Pirates.
In boys' action, the Bears (19-13) just could not get on track offensively in the game, and before the night was through, Mammoth Spring had four players foul out.
Melbourne (18-9) took a 12-9 lead after the first period of play and the Bearkatz extended that cushion to 23-14 at the half.
Seth Godwin paced Mammoth Spring with 16 points, while Wes Davis added 11.
Michael Lunsford hit for a game-high 26 points to lead Melbourne. Lee Lewis tallied 15 for the Katz.
