Scott selected as grand marshal

Thursday, December 13, 2007

ALTON -- The Alton Culture Club named Pastor David Scott as grand marshal for this year's Christmas Parade.

Culture Club President Tammy Curtis made the announcement at the Dec. 1 Little Mr. and Miss Merry Christmas Pageant.

"Many great things are accomplished and many lives are touched through the hard work of volunteers. Such is the case with this year's grand marshal," Curtis said.

Scott is the pastor of two local churches, the Thayer United Methodist Church and the Alton United Methodist Church. He also serves in several church affiliated services.

Curtis said it is his volunteer service in the community her club would like to recognize.

He currently serves on the board of directors for the Southern Missouri Community Health Center, the Oregon County Community Health Center and the Rural Alliance for Better Family Health.

Scott is the alliance president for the Alton Area Ministerial Alliance, a member and past board of directors member of the Mammoth Spring/Thayer Rotary Club. He is a volunteer chaplin at the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains, a member of the board of directors of the city of Alton Park Board and a member of the board of directors and CEO of the Oregon County Food Pantry.

Scott was born in Wichita, Kan., and raised in Springfield.

In 2004 he was appointed by the Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church to serve two of the largest Methodist churches in Oregon County.

Since coming to Alton, he has been instrumental in the formation of the Oregon County Food Pantry. Scott said he has a number of initiatives planned for the future. He would like to look at good quality, affordable housing as a possible project for the area.

"It is his most basic desire to be an enabler of helping people work together, and it is his belief that food, clothing, housing and health care are the most critical areas of needs to be met," she said.

Scott said he thinks one of his greatest accomplishments that best meets the church and community was the design and development of the Community Worship Center. It is the hub of many youth and community activities and the distribution center for the Alton Food Pantry.
