Nolen Ralph Runnels, 80, of Salem, son of the late Charles Lawrence and Stella Ethel Milton Runnels, was born Nov. 23, 1924, at Pollard, Ark. He died March 12, 2005, at Salem, Ark.
He married Norma Irene Burcher June 28, 2003, at Mountain Home, Ark. He spent his working years as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a superintendent for the California Highway Department. He served his country in the United States Navy and the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 418 of Salem and was of the Assembly of God faith.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Runnels of Salem; a son, Larry Runnels and wife, Martha, of Oakley, Calif.; 3 stepsons -- Kenneth Chambers and wife, Melody, of Evansville, Ind.; Leslie Chambers and wife, Cindy of Fort Bragg, Calif, and Arthur Chambers and wife, Dennette, of Sebastopol, Calif.; two daughters -- Rebecca Stansfield and husband, Keith, of California, and Patricia Alden of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two stepdaughters -- Lori Chambers of Fort Bragg, Calif., and Wendy Chambers of Sebastopol, Calif.; a sister, Thelma Schlenker of Murphysboro, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; 17 step grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and five sisters.
The funeral service was March 16 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel in Salem with Warren Cadenbach officiating. A graveside service and interment followed at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Campbell, Mo., with arrangements under the direction of Barker Funeral Home of Salem, Ark. Larry Runnels officiated at the service.
