James Oren McCurley, son of the late James Ewell McCurley and Helen Irene Evans McCurley, was born March 12, 1936, in Wideman, Ark. He died Jan. 5, 2006, in Calico Rock, Ark., at the age of 69.
He was united in marriage to Carolyn Blevins on Feb. 14, 1983, in Batesville, Ark.
He worked many years as a rural mail carrier, serving the communities of Oxford, Wideman, Pineville and Calico Rock.
He served in the National Guard and Army Reserves for 25 years and was on active duty for three years.
He made a profession of faith in Christ and was baptized at the age of 18.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years; Carolyn McCurley of Oxford; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Jerald and Myrna McCurley of Wideman, Kenneth McCurley of Wideman, Keith and Pat McCurley of Wideman, and Teddy and Phyllis McCurley of Oxford; one sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Norman Montgomey of Viola; one stepdaughter, Angie Steer, and husband, Tom, of Mountain Home; one stepson, Greg McCoach of Oxford; four stepgrandchildren, Steven Steer of Texarkana, Beth Hutcherson of Mountain Home, Michael Steer of Springfield, Mo., and Jesse Steer of Mountain Home; one step-great-grandson, Andrew Steer; and a host of other relatives and many good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers; one nephew, Michael Montgomery; and one niece, Kelli Franks.
A graveside service was held Jan. 8 at Flat Rock Cemetey with David Jennings officiating.
Pallbearers were Toby McCurley, Monty McCurley, Doug McCurley, Scott McCurley, Brent McCurley and Emery Weems.
Honorary pallbearers were J.A. Ward, Alfred Grice, Darrell Ball, Jack Grimmett, Charlie Townsend and Michael Denny.
