Man pleads guilty to molestation charges

Thursday, August 4, 2005

HOWELL COUNTY -- A Thayer man was sentenced to two 15-year sentences in Howell County Court June 26.

Mikel R. Sand, 28, was in the Howell County Associate Court on a change of venue from Oregon County. He pleaded guilty to two counts of child molestation and was sentenced by Judge Don Henry.

The charges stem from an incident in Oregon County involving two girls under the age of 12 between June 2001 and July 2003.

Sand last appeared in court in Howell County June 20 for violating conditions of his parole by leaving the area.

Sand was taken into custody in Texas last March for possession of cocaine. Oregon County records show he was trying to re-enter the U.S. from Mexico when he was caught.

Sand was originally charged in the winter of 2004 in Oregon County with deviant sexual intercourse with a person less than 14 years old and child molestation. His bail, which he posted, was $100,000 and he was not to travel beyond Oregon, Howell, Shannon and Carter counties.
