Fred Daniel Gardner, 73, of Quitman, died Oct. 6, 2005. He was born in Thayer, Mo., the son of the late Clifton and Elsie Cargile Gardner on Nov. 23, 1931. Educated in both Arkansas and Missouri, he was a graduate of Alton High School. He spent two years in the United States Army serving in Korea, and was a lifetime member of the Rice Young VFW Post 7514. He was employed for 23 years with Frisco Railroad and five years as an over the road truck driver, owner and operator. He was a member of Masonic Lodges Holland 158, Chocktaw 617, Wileys Cove 524, Pleasant Grove 380, and Calf Creek 426. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Cadron Chapter 581 and dual membership with Morning Star 633. He served as a member of the Quitman City Council and attended Higden Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen; a sister, Noble Jean Beene, both of Quitman; sons, Billie Gardner of Thayer and Danny Gardner of D'Iberville, Miss., stepchildren, Ted Crenshaw and Sherri Friesen, both of Quitman; step-grandchildren, Jason Clark and wife, Cecely, Emily Crenshaw, Lance Friesen, Jesse and Sadie Gardner, Casey and MaKenzie Gardner. and other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services were held with Masonic Rites Oct. 8 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with Dr. G.C. Blair officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Olmstead Funeral Home Inc. www.olmstead.cc
