Ash Flat residents must show numbers

Residents of Ash Flat will soon be required to display house numbers.

The city council unanimously accepted the first reading of an ordinance that, once accepted, will require residents to display "clearly visible assigned numbers on residential, commercial and industrial structures."

The number is to be placed in clear view from the street to help emergency personnel locate homes and businesses in emergencies.

"We have trouble every once in a while trying to find a residence because the numbers aren't on a house or they're hidden," said Ash Flat Fire Chief Stacy Horton. "They used to tell us the people's names and we knew most everybody and where they lived so it wasn't a problem. Now they go by numbers and we've got to be able to find these people in an emergency."

The numbers are to be placed near the walk, driveway or common entrance to the home or on a mailbox. Numbers stenciled on a curb are not sufficient. The numbers must be at least three inches tall and made of reflective material to aid in finding addresses at night.

Police Chief Mike Zeiger told the council the numbers should be placed near the roadway or on mailboxes to keep emergency personnel from spotlighting homes at night looking for addresses.

Horton said many of the homes in the city aren't properly addressed. In fact, many property owners have not changed their address numbers to the new addresses which took effect when the county 9-1-1 system was installed.

Non-compliance could results in fines of $50 for the first offense, $100 for the second offense and $150 for the third offense.

Property owners can erect the signs themselves or the fire department will provide the signs for $8 to $10. If a sign needs a post the additional cost will be $7. For more information contact Ash Flat Fire Department at 870-994-3066.

City Attorney Larry Kissee is researching a proposed access easement with Wal-Mart that would provide another entrance to the store from Nix Ridge Road.

The non-exclusive easement would provide pedestrian and vehicle ingress and egress from Nix Ridge Road to the Wal-Mart parking lot. Under the easement certain businesses would not be allowed, or including any business whose major source of business is derived from the cashing of checks or making loans with the exceptions of banks and other financial institutions insured by FDIC."

"Wal-Mart wants to make sure no strip clubs or beer joints will be built nearby," said Recorder/treasurer Charlotte Goodwin, who read the proposal before the council.
