Born 10-9-1931 -- Died 8-10-2005

Major, USAF (Ret.) Tom (T.J.) Yowell was born on Oct. 9, 1931 in Paducah, Texas to Mildred and Grover Yowell. He died Aug. 10, 2005 after a four-year battle with cancer. He will be remembered always as a humble, giving man, devoted to his family and country.

He was preceded in death by his parents of Hardy.

He was the beloved husband of 50 years to Marguerita and is survived by his children -- Mickie Smith; Karan and husband Stephen Marsh; Thomas and wife Lydia Yowell; Gary and wife Keren Yowell; and Wendy and husband Jon Weddle; devoted grandfather to Brian Smith, Ryan, Jenna, Chris, Freddie, and Mannie Yowell, and Harrison and Alexander Weddle. He is also survived by his sister, Karli Dye of Amarillo, Texas and brother, Grover Yowell of Chatsworth, Calif.

Yowell was raised in Hardy and dreamed of flying jets. He joined the Air Force as a test pilot and was stationed in Ramstien, Germany where he met and married the love of his life, Marguerita. Tom and Marguerita toured the world with their five children through Africa, Spain, and several U.S. cities to retire after his tour in Vietnam in Sacramento, Calif. Tom graduated from USC with a masters in Business Administration which he taught at American River Junior College after retiring from the USAF. Tom then pursued a career serving the public with the California Department of Social Services.

Tom was deeply adored and respected by his family, friends, and all those lives he touched. Tom's second love was singing with Placerville's Gold Rush Chorus and barbershop quartet with his many close friends - and he reserves the front row seat for all future performances to watch those guys. Tom's place was, and will be empty in the chorus and barbershop performances.

"And so as the sun comes to rest on the rim of the west, I'll be thinking of you folks, cause that's what's happening now. From the first hello to the last good-bye this is Tom signing off."

A vigil/rosary was held Aug. 11 in Cameron Park, Calif. Services and internment with full military honors by Beale Air Force Base followed at Green Valley Mortuary, Cameron Park on Aug. 12.
