Marvin Ray Newton, of Viola, Ark., son of the late John Henry and Veda Ethel (Skelton) Newton was born on Oct. 7, 1939, near Elizabeth, Ark. He died Sept. 23, 2007, at his home, at the age of 67.

Marvin was united in marriage to Judith Lynn Hopper on June 3, 1978, at Flippin, Ark. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

Marvin spent a total of 46 years in education at Viola, Mountain Home, Norfork and Ozark, Mo. He served the last 32 years as superintendent at Viola. Marvin received his bachelor's and master's Ddegrees from Arkansas State Teachers College (now UCA) and his specialist degree in education from the University of Arkansas.

He was a member of the Viola First Baptist Church and the Arkansas Rural Association of Educators. He served on the Board of Directors at the Bank of Salem and the Association of Educational Administrators.

He is survived by: his wife, Judy Newton of Viola; two sons, Gary Marvin Newton (Alanna) of Little Rock, Ark., and Lance Newton (Lindsay) of Flippin; two daughters, Lisa Newton of Olive Branch, Miss., and Sharmin Jennings (Chris) of Viola; brother, Evert Newton of Greenbrier, Ark.; sister, Ruthy Davis of Moses Lake, Wash.; five grandchildren, Casey Akins, Austin Jennings, Logan Jennings, John Henry Newton and Lilliana Newton; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, four brothers, Ray Gene Williams, Leon Williams, Richard Newton and Grady Newton; four sisters, Frances Ruble, Ruby Davis, Veda Brazzell; and an infant.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 1 p.m., at the Viola First Baptist Church, in Viola, with Bro. John Hodges officiating.

Interment will follow in the Flippin Cemetery in Flippin. Arrangements are under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Salem, Ark.
