Two Thayer residents have been arrested and charged with four counts of felony forgery.
Davis said he received a call from a West Plains woman, Bonnie Holloway, in late September concerning a checkbook of hers that had been stolen from her home. Holloway told the officer the account the checkbook was stolen on had been closed and she had reason to believe a couple from either Mammoth Spring or Thayer had stolen it.
Arrested were Jerry Drake, 20, and Crystal Wilcox, 28, both of Thayer.
Davis said three checks on the account were written to the Cedar Craft Mall in Mammoth Spring in the amounts of $301, $179 and $134. He said the checks were written in mid- November. Davis said a check was also written on the account to Mammoth Spring Superette in the amount of $170. Davis said this check was also written in mid-November.
Davis said the pair admitted to some Christmas shopping with the checks, and when he asked them to produce what they had bought with the stolen checks all they brought into the office was what the officer described as junk and did not come near adding up to what was spent in the two stores.
Davis said he thought some stolen checks might also turn up in Thayer.
Drake and Wilcox will be arraigned in Fulton County Circuit Court later this month.
