Mammoth achieve national certification

Two Mammoth Spring Elementary School teachers, Lana Steed and Paula Baldridge, have achieved national board certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

Steed and Baldridge are two of only 730 teachers nationwide who earned national board certification this year and the only two teachers in the Mammoth Spring School District to achieve the certificates.

Steed teaches fourth grade and has been a teacher for 17 years. She holds a BS degree in elementary education as well as a master's degree in language arts from Harding University.

Baldridge teaches second grade. She has been a teacher for 19 years and holds a BS in early childhood and elementary education and a special education degree from ASU.

"I can't say enough about either teacher," said Mammoth Spring School Superintendent Ron Taylor. "I have known Mrs. Steed her entire life. She went through school here at Mammoth Spring and graduated from high school here. She has spent her entire teaching career in the Mammoth Spring School District," Taylor said.

"Mrs. Baldridge has spent 19 years in the teaching profession. She does a professional and outstanding job. Her children have attended school here and she still has children in our school district," the superintendent said.

He said both teachers are a credit to their profession and the community.

"This speaks well of these two teachers, especially in Arkansas where their professional development credits have doubled the last couple of years," Taylor said.

"Teachers who earn national board certification represent the gold standard in teaching and are among the most effective teachers in our nation's classrooms today," said former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes, chairman of the NBPTS Board of Directors.

National board certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession. It is a voluntary process, and certification is achieved through rigorous performance-based assessment that is usually completed over a year and measures what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.

The process requires teachers to demonstrate how their activities, both inside and outside the classroom, improve student achievement.
