O.F. "Tobe" "Cotton" Holmes, 79, of Kilgore, Texas, was born one of nine children on Dec. 31, 1925, in Oregon County, Mo., the son of the late Frank and Maude Holmes. He died Nov. 25, 2005, at his home.
He attended public schools in Missouri before joining the United States Army. During World War II Holmes landed in Normandy, Franco, crossed the English Channel on D-day and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. In March of 1945, in Kesternich, Germany, he earned his Purple Heart while rescuing a wounded officer.
After the war he moved to Kilgore in 1946, where he worked as a truck driver in the oil field until his retirement in 1993 from the ABF Freight Company. During his retirement he drove a school bus for the Kilgore Independent School District.
He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Holmes was a member of the Church of Nazarene, the DAV and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Holmes of Kilgore, Texas; one son, Herman F. Holmes and his wife, Diana, of Winona; daughters, Judy White and her husband, Bo, of Kilgore, Linda Bradley and her husband, Johnny, of Kilgore; step-children, Jackie Dempster and Robert Williams, both of Dallas; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The mother of his children, Ruby Hollis Tucker preceded him in death in November of 2004.
Services were Nov. 28 at the Church of the Nazarene in Kilgore, Texas with the Rev. Mark Hendrix officiating. Burial followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Longview, Texas with arrangements under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Kilgore, Texas.
