Crotts celebrates 101 years of life

Thursday, December 1, 2005

Chloe Crotts, a resident of the Fulton County Nursing and Rehab, was honored with a 101st birthday party Nov. 18. The party was hosted by administrator Perry Tidwell and his department staff.

It was enjoyed by many friends, family members and residents of the nursing center. The table was decorated with a beautiful cake, yellow and purple flowers and balloons. Crotts wore a corsage of yellow and purple flowers.

Crotts was born and raised in the Fulton County area, living most of the time around the Byron community. She married Burgen Crotts and raised two beautiful children, Bonita Williams and James Crotts. She said she is especially proud of all her grandchildren: Linda Hickman, Laura Drexler, Nita Williams, Karen Ince, Dianne Fell, Marilyn Sikes, Kenney Williams and Ricky Williams. She has enjoyed several great-, great-great-, and great-great-great-grandchildren.

Crotts said that over the years she did gardening, canning with a pressure cooker, working in the cotton fields, hoeing and picking cotton and milking cows. She and her husband sold milk to the cheese factory in Salem for several years.

She recalls how excited she got when they sold their first two bales of cotton. The bales brought enough money for them to buy a new truck and get several little items they needed.

Later, the Crottses started selling eggs on a route in the Viola area. They had bought a red 1965 Chevy pickup truck which she dearly loved. Every Friday they ran their egg route in this truck.

One granddaughter, Marilyn Sikes, recalled, "Grandma never drove the truck but she was a good backseat driver. In their later years they were not supposed to be driving but when the son and daughter-in-law left for town, they would get in the truck and head to the Byron store and make the trip an exciting event."

When asked to recall some memories of her 101 years Crotts said her favorite memories were of Christmas time with her grandparents, the Hunters. She said she had been blessed with a joyful life, a wonderful family and lots of friends.
