Fishing trip ends in death

Mammoth Spring man falls from boat while fishing on Spring River

MAMMOTH SPRING -- A late summer fishing trip turned tragic last week for a grandfather and his grandson.

Fulton County Sheriff Walter Dillinger said the Hardy Dive Team pulled the body of Steven Vaughn from the Spring River at 11:50 p.m. Sept. 13.

Family members of Vaughn said he and his grandfather, Virgil Collins of Mammoth Spring, had been fishing in the late evening near the Bayou Access on the Spring River when Vaughn, 20, stood up in the boat and grabbed his neck before falling over the side of the boat into the river.

Dillinger said his office was dispatched to the scene at 7:04 p.m. Vaughn's family said his body was located in about 12 feet. of water near where he went over the side of the boat.

Fulton County Coroner Steve Barker was called to the scene where he pronounced Vaughn dead. He said the body has been sent to the medical examiner's office in Little Rock to determine the cause of death.

Vaughn is a 2004 graduate of Mammoth Spring High School. He recently graduated from a heavy equipment training school in Tulsa, Okla.

Fulton County Deputies James Cantrell, Bruce Green and Scott Holloway, as well as Mammoth Spring Police Officer Jamie Turnbough, assisted by the Hardy Dive Team in their efforts to locate and recover Vaughns body.

As of press time no cause of death had been determined.
