MS man wanted by police

Friday, March 24, 2006

A Mammoth Spring man is wanted by Cherokee Village police for fleeing after a traffic stop March 13.

William M. Tibbits Jr., 21, has charges pending for fleeing on foot, speeding and no driver's license. He also has an active warrant for parole violation, Cherokee Village Officer Ric Morris said.

Morris initiated a traffic stop on Tasco Drive on a 1999 Dodge Stratus, belonging to Jennah W. Atkins, that had been speeding while on Iroquois Drive.

Tibbits, the driver, got out of the vehicle but returned to the car at Morris' request. Tibbits sat in the car for a short time before he got back out and ran into the woods, leaving his two passengers behind, Morris said.

Officers with Highland Police Department, Sharp County Sheriff's Office and the Arkansas State Police looked for the man but never found him.

One of the passengers, Tamara DeCutler, 34, told Morris that Tibbits was taking her from the pool hall in Hardy to her home in Cherokee Village, Morris said.

The other passenger, Atkins, 19, of Thayer told Morris that she and Tibbits had traveled to the area to locate Tibbits' child. She added that Tibbits' real name was Michael Lasseter and that he was the brother of a friend of hers, Morris said. She said he and his wife, Tiffany, live in Mammoth Spring at 5th and Tate streets.

Morris, who did not know Tibbits' real name at the time, then contacted the Fulton County Sheriff's Office and the Mammoth Spring Police Department. Mammoth Spring Officer Mike Davis knew Atkins and recognized her and her traveling companion by their descriptions. She told Morris the suspect's name was not Lasseter but Tibbits, who lives on Walker Avenue. in Mammoth Spring. He said Atkins and Tibbits are dating.

Sharp County Central Dispatch found no record of Lasseter in the state file.

Officer M. Wanley searched the car and found hemostats with marijuana residue and rolling papers, Morris said.

Morris charged Atkins with obstructing governmental operations and possession of an instrument of crime.

Tibbits had not been arrested as of press time March 22.
