Young artist gains national attention

Thursday, January 18, 2007

One local talent made such an impression that she recently wowed a national audience.

Jan. 8 15-year-old Kaleena Hutchins won a weekly contest sponsored by CBS' "The Early Show."

This Melbourne native beat two other young musicians in the show's "Living Room Live: Kids' Edition" video contest by playing the "William Tell Overture" on her harmonica.

"Living Room Live" viewers submit videos of themselves performing odd or amazing talents. The show then airs excerpts of the videos selected by show producers as the best or most original.

The final say-so belongs to television viewers from around the country.

Viewers go online and vote for their favorite of three videos; according to the CBS Web site, Hutchins received 47 percent of the vote.

Now that Hutchins advanced passed the first round, she will compete against other weekly winners. If she reaches the finals, Hutchins will play live on "The Early Show" in New York.
