Hospital establishes foundation

Tuesday, July 3, 2007

A group of residents from the tri-county area of Fulton, Sharp and Izard counties, have come together to establish a new organization.

This group, called the Fulton County Hospital Foundation, Inc., gathered for the first time on June 19 to discuss the mission of the foundation.

According to the foundation's bylaws, "The FCHF is organized exclusively for charitable and community service purposes and not for profit. Its purpose is the advancement of the health and overall welfare a well-being services provided by Fulton County Hospital for the residents of the tri-county area."

The key to this newly established group is that it is a non-profit organization, said hospital foundation board chairman Shanna McGuffee. "The foundation is not a part of the hospital; it's a companion to the growth of the hospital," she said.

The money raised by the foundation will not be used exclusively for the hospital expansion efforts, said the foundation board's executive committee hospital agent Treana Spears. Any money generated by the group could be used in a variety of ways.

Spears said the uses of the funds will include anything from aiding patients struggling with medical bills, to buying new hospital furniture, to being given as a scholarship. "We want this money to be an assistance with community projects -- not just (Fulton County) hospital projects," she said. "We want to help people in the three-county community that might fall through the cracks."

"We want to recruit members, and we can accept charitable donations," McGuffee said.

The foundation is currently in the application process to be given official non-profit status. Upon this status approval, all donations and even current donations will be tax deductible, said McGuffee and Spears.

Anyone within the tri-county area who is willing to give of their time for the betterment of the community is encouraged to join the foundation. Those individuals can contact Spears at the Fulton County Hospital at 895-2691.

For those who do not want to become a foundation member but still want to make a monetary contribution, mail donations to: Fulton County Hospital Foundation, attention Treana Spears, P.O. Box 517, Salem, AR 72576 or starting July 1, a donation can be deposited in the foundation account at any FNBC within Fulton, Sharp or Izard county.

"This can be a really great thing," Spears said. "To have the ability to help someone pay their medical bill -- that's a huge thing."
