Family rescued from water

Tuesday, July 3, 2007

A Leachville couple took a couple of mementos away from their canoe trip down the rain swollen Spring River ---- citations.

Douglas McCarney, 46, and Wendy McCarney, 43, rented two canoes from M&M Canoe Rental Company with their 8-year-old son and another couple from Jonesboro July 1, said Assistant Police Chief James Hutchison of the Hardy Police Department.

The group of five were taken to the low water bridge at River Bend Park outside Hardy where they got into the canoes and began their float to the Hardy Beach, Hutchison said.

About halfway through the trip, the group began having problems. At Twin Falls both canoes got caught in the rock and capsized, Hutchison said. While the Jonesboro couple were able to get out of the river, the McCarney family became stuck on a drift in the middle of the river with the swift current surrounding them, Hutchison said.

Hardy Water Rescue members were able to rescue they family from the river using boats, Hutchison said.

The McCarneys were both cited for endangering the welfare of a minor. Mark McArthur of M&M Canoe was also cited for the same offense.
