The Salem Fire Department was called to a house belonging to William Jarrett at 265 Byron Road at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 10, according to Fire Chief Heath Everett. When firefighters arrived, the kitchen was engulfed in flames. The nine firefighters who responded brought three trucks to battle the fire and used approximately 5,000 gallons of water to extinguish the flames. Firefighters remained on the scene until 1:30 p.m., Everett said. The fire began in the kitchen of the home in the area of the stove, but it is unknown what caused the fire to begin. There were no injuries, Everett said.
