Area cagers will want to check in with their coaches in the coming days, as invitations to the second annual Grizzly All-Star Games were recently mailed to area coaches.
Brian Ostermann, head coach of the Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly men's basketball team, said scouts have evaluated the area's top high school basketball talents and made their final decisions about which players they want to see compete in the April 14 event at the West Plains Civic Center arena.
"Last year was our first all-star event, and it was a success," Ostermann said. "We believe this year's games will be even better. Our area deserves to have an all-star contest like this to recognize the tremendous basketball players we have in south-central Missouri and north-central Arkansas."
Hosted by the Grizzly Basketball program and sponsored by Dr. Rick Walker of Southern Missouri Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Clinic in West Plains, the event will feature the top 24 senior boys and the top 24 senior girls from varsity high school teams in south-central Missouri and north-central Arkansas, as chosen by a panel of coaches. Players selected will arrive the morning of the all-star games to practice with the high school coaches selected to coach them during the competition. Following a pizza party luncheon and bowling, sponsored by Lightning Bowl of West Plains, the girls' all-star game will get underway at 4:30 p.m., and the boys will play at 7 p.m. April 14. Three-point and slam dunk contests will be held at 6 p.m.
Ostermann said the finalized rosters will be announced around March 30, and ticket information for the games will soon follow that announcement.
A game program for the event will be developed. Businesses and individuals can purchase an ad in the program by contacting Ostermann at 417-255-7991.
